Fitness with baby & toddler

Welcome to my very own arena, where the sneakers are often adorned with drool cloth remnants and the pulse rises faster than the diaper mountain after the lunch puree! Today we dive into the tough but also incredibly liberating world of "Fitness with Baby". Believe me, by the end of this article, you might find that your stroller can do more than just transport children – and that a sweaty T-shirt has morphed into the new glamour look.

1. When do we start? And is it even a good idea to exercise with a baby?

You're probably asking yourself: "Exercise with a child? Right after childbirth? Is she crazy?"

Absolutely legitimate question!

And the answer is: Yes, I am sometimes a little crazy.

But timing is everything, and that applies not only to the perfect wave but also to your comeback in terms of fitness. "Fitness with Baby" usually starts only when your little troublemaker is at least 6 weeks old and your doctor has given the green light. This gives your body (and soul!) enough time to recover from the marathon of childbirth. And, to be honest, after the first sleepless weeks, you are mentally ready for any kind of challenge, right?

"Fitness with Baby" is not just a trend that looks good on Instagram while you actually feel like a plucked chicken. No, it's a real survival strategy! It's the opportunity to do something good for your body while your mini-me is with you. Imagine: You're getting exhausted, and your baby smiles at you (or is blissfully sleeping – jackpot!). This is the ultimate multitasking challenge where you not only get fitter but also build an even deeper bond with your child. And the best part? You don’t have to push your baby away. It’s your Workout Buddy!

2. How does this circus work? And which exercises are actually worthwhile?

Imagine: You’re in the middle of a Bootcamp in the park, the sun is shining, the birds are chirping – and you’re lifting your baby like a little living dumbbell. Or you’re doing squats while your child sits on your lap gurgling. That’s "Sport with Child" in its purest form! Whether it's HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) with baby weight or gentle postnatal exercises – it works!

Try the "Baby Squat": Hold your baby securely against your chest and do squats. Your back remains straight, your legs are burning, and your baby gets a free roller coaster ride! Or how about the "Stroller Sprint"? Yes, you heard right. Push your stroller at full speed through the park. This is not only good for your stamina but your baby also gets fresh air and action. For the slightly older toddlers, you can introduce the "Backpack Run." Your child on your back, and off you go. More weight, more challenge, more muscle soreness!

It’s important to listen to your body. And to your baby's! If the baby gets restless, take a break. If you feel pain, stop. It’s not about breaking records, but about staying active and having fun. And hey, a few burpees with baby cries in the background are definitely a next level of training!

3. Why should I even put myself through this? The benefits of "Fitness with Baby"

Let’s be honest: after childbirth, the body isn’t quite the same anymore. A bit like a wild night out, after which you wonder: "What just happened here?" Fitness with baby is your ticket back to more energy and zest for life. It’s like an espresso for tired parents – only completely natural and without a racing heart. It relieves tension, reduces stress, and floods your body with endorphins. Essentially, a happiness cocktail without a hangover.

You benefit from a strengthened core (yes, it wants to be back!), a strong pelvic floor, and better posture. Bye-bye, back pain from constant carrying and nursing! Your body has accomplished incredible things, and now it’s time to get it back in shape. And yes, even if the dark circles under your eyes are deeper than the ocean, a workout can work wonders.

For your baby, sport with child promotes sensory development (through movement and interaction), restful sleep (because mom is worn out and thus calmer), and prepares it for its motor skills. The time you spend together while training strengthens your bond in a very special way. Babies love closeness, eye contact, and gentle movements. And if you sing a little while doing it, the joy is double! By the way, you also meet other moms and dads in courses like "Fitness with Baby" or at the bootcamp who go through the same craziness. It’s like a support group – just with more sweat and less coffee.

4. Fitness in everyday life: Here's how we get this thing done (or better: moving)!

Integrating "Fitness with Baby" or sport with child into everyday life is – unlike cleaning the child's room – sometimes easier than you think. No more excuses like "no time" or "no babysitter"! Your baby is your babysitter, your weight, and your personal trainer all in one.

Start small. A few minutes here, a few squats there. Grab your baby and just dance through the living room. Or use the time when your Toddler plays in the sandbox, for a few sprints or jumping jacks. Yes, the looks from other parents are certain to you, but who cares? You are a role model for your child!

Use playtime, the time before naptime or even cooking time. While the water is boiling for the pasta, you can do some calf raises. Or you can do your own little HIIT-workout while your baby lies on the play mat, fascinated by your movements. If your toddler can walk already, integrate them into your workout: "Run, Mama, faster!" becomes a motivational aid. Make it a routine, like brushing your teeth, just with more adrenaline.

5. A few heartfelt tips from me for your fitness with baby adventure

  • Flexibility is your best muscle: And not just in stretching exercises! Adapt to each session. Sometimes your baby laughs, sometimes it cries loud enough to echo through the neighborhood. Stay relaxed!
  • Interactive toys always within reach: Sometimes a rattle or a soft ball helps to keep your little workout buddies entertained.
  • Listen to your baby (and yourself!): When your darling gets restless, it's time for a break. Or integrate them into the exercise. An airplane with Mama as the runway is also a great "sport with child" moment!
  • Your stroller is your friend: Use it for quick walks, jogging sessions, or as support for squats.
  • Celebrate every small victory: Whether it's a 5-minute power workout or just an extended walk – every step counts!

From the couch to the bootcamp, your "fitness with baby" journey is a constantly evolving experience – just like life with children. Celebrate the small victories and laugh at the perfectly imperfect workouts."Fitness with baby" becomes a tool for more energy, balance, and a ritual that deepens your bond with your child.

So, there you have it: A hopefully entertaining and motivating guide to bringing "fitness with baby" into your life. From the first sweat breakout to the moments when your toddler joins in, this practice is so much more than just movement. It's a shared adventure, a laugh, and sometimes, yes sometimes, even the only way to clear your head before the madness of everyday life strikes again.
